"Libro de Govierno de señor Don Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera desde 9 de Iullio de 1641 años hasta de Henero de 1642. Secretario Geronimo Nuñez de Quiros."

Hurtado de Corcuera, Don Sebastian. Title on vellum binding and title-leaf. A record of all postings, appointments, promotions, transfers etc., issued or authorized by Don Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera, governor of the Philippines, 1635-1644, between 9 July 1641 [really, 1640] and 12 January 1642. Folio, original vellum. 216 numbered written leaves, and several blank unnumbered leaves. Fls.60-80 and 172-216 holed, affecting some words in the the text. *Removed. In folder marked 1718. Philippine mss. Cruz, Ignation de la. Petition.

Despite the wording on the vellum cover and the title-leaf, this record-book covers more than the title promises, as it really begins on the 9 July 1640, with a decree appointing Simon Delgado as Admiral of the two galleons bound from Manila to Acapulco, and is continuous from then.

A very valuable record of this period of Hurtado de Corcuera's eventful and controversial governorship. All the original entries are transcribed here in full, and most of them are not listed in Pablo Pastells, S.J., Catalogo de los documents relatives a las islas Filipinas existentes en el archive de Indias de Sevilla, Vols. VII and VII (Barcelona, 1932-33), which cover this period. Particularly useful for biographical data concerning the persons in favour of whom the appointments were made, as their previous services are recapitulated at length.
